    JOANNE BERRY

Ms. Joanne Berry began her career with British Nuclear Fuels in 1996 as part of the Graduate Development Program and, in 1998, relocated to the United States to support the Hanford Tank Waste Remediation and Stabilization Project, now known as the Hanford Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. Over her career, Joanne has contributed to major projects at Hanford, Savannah River, and Sellafield.

Today Ms. Berry leads a dedicated team driving digital transformation across US Nuclear operations, applying immersive technologies, digital twins, virtual site access, and advanced modeling to improve efficiency, enhance safety, and reduce risk across U.S. nuclear operations.

Outside work, Ms. Berry is a certified group fitness instructor teaching cycle and strength training classes – including immersive cycle experiences.  She also enjoys playing golf, skiing and gardening in her spare time.

"Transforming and Accelerating Project Delivery Through  Immersive Technology "
The nuclear sector faces major challenges in both environmental remediation and commercial operations. Legacy cleanup sites such as Hanford, Savannah River, Idaho, Oakridge, Portsmouth, Paducah and New Mexico demand safe, efficient, and cost-effective approaches to long-term remediation. At the same time, commercial nuclear facilities must focus on safe operations, new build projects, and the complexities of decommissioning. Across both areas, there is an urgent need to accelerate project delivery, reduce costs, improve safety, and meet carbon reduction and net zero targets.

To address these challenges, AtkinsRéalis US Nuclear are commissioning a next-generation Immersive Room that will come online this year at their new state-of-the-art AtkinsRéalis Technology Center in Richland, Washington. The Immersive Room integrates floor-to-ceiling 4K projection to create a highly realistic and interactive environment where teams can engage with designs, data, and scenarios at full scale with a wide variety of use case including.

    • Design and stakeholder reviews to identify issues earlier and streamline regulatory approvals.
    • Virtual site access and remote inspections using 360 cameras mounted on helmets, robotic dogs or drones to reduce travel and limit exposure to hazardous environments.
    • 4D and 5D digital rehearsals and Digital Twin technology and Augmented Reality to help optimize construction, operations and maintenance sequences, identify cost implications, and schedule impacts prior to full implementation.
    • Operator and maintainer training in realistic but safe digital environments.
    • Health and safety training exercises and emergency preparedness to strengthen workforce readiness.
