Project Management and Systems Engineering: Joined at the Hip

For decades, project management has been honed into a craft offering enduring guidelines and principles to guarantee successful project results. Emerging alongside, yet not as widely recognized, is the discipline of systems engineering. This methodology brings together technical specialists from diverse fields and offers a framework and core principles to tackle complex technical challenges. This presentation will offer a concise glimpse into the synergy between project management and systems engineering principles, demonstrating how their combined application can bolster projects against uncertainties and foster more reliable project outcomes.

Artis Riepnieks is an Electrical Research Engineer in the Distributed Systems Group, Systems Engineering team at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Artis has more than 12 years of experience in electrical engineering and research. In 2019 he joined PNNL from Latvian Distribution System Operator “Sadales tikls” where he led the Customer Service Systems Unit, responsible for customer service IT/OT systems (energy market, billing, customer web-portal) and smart metering solutions (meter data collection/management systems, telecommunications, and solution cybersecurity). Artis has experience working as a systems engineer and technical lead of smart metering rollout programs and grid automation projects. Artis received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 2018 and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, and two B.Sc.’s (Telecommunications and Power Engineering) from Riga Technical University (RTU) Latvia. Artis’s professional interests involve electrical measurements, communications for the grid, systems engineering, and making the grid smarter, more resilient, and secure. Artis currently serves as PNNL Corporate Advisory Board member in the International Council On Systems Engineering (INCOSE) and INCOSE Cascade Chapter president.
